1,5-Diazacyclooctatetraene (NCOT) is an interesting diaza-analogue of the well-known cyclooctatetraene (COT) with its two 1,5-CHs being replaced by two N atoms, but the reactivity of NCOT remains almost entirely unknown. The incorporation of nitrogen atoms into the conjugated system would bring about new chemistry.
In this work, as shown in the scheme, the first structurally well-defined aromatic 1,5-diazacyclooctatetraenyl dianion, an analogue of the well-known cyclooctatetraenyl dianion, was realized via a two-electron reduction of NCOT with potassium. A novel dinuclear Co(II) complex bridged by a bipyrrolinyl dianion was formed by the reduction of NCOT with a Co(I) complex and was successfully structurally characterized.
