Dr. Hockberger will describe how excellence of research (core) facilities contribute to building a world-class research university. Using Northwestern University as a case study, he will describe four pillars that are essential and necessary to ensure the long-term viability and success of these facilities: core personnel, core space, institutional investment, and institutional evaluation. With these pillars in place, core facilities are well positioned to fulfill their key value propositions, to demonstrate a robust return on investment, and to ensure that they remain vibrant, sustainable components of the research ecosystem for the foreseeable future.
