Reversible covalent interactions of organoboron compounds have been applied extensively in molecular recognition and chemical sensing. My group has developed reactions that take advantage of the strength and selectivity of these interactions. This approach has led to the discovery of methods for selective O–H and C–H functionalization of carbohydrate derivatives, site- and stereoselective glycosylations, polymerizations of sugar-derived feedstocks, as well as ring-opening and rearrangement reactions of epoxy alcohols. Mechanistic studies of these processes will be discussed.
